My Davis ancestry is a big unknown at the moment.  I know that Elizabeth Davis married Robert Morrison on 31 Jan 1861 in Martin Co., IN, that she was the first of his three wives, and presumably the mother of my great-grandmother Sarah Ella Morrison, b. 19 Dec 1969.   I know that Elizabeth is buried in the Acre Cemtery in Halbert Township, Martin Co., IN and that she died in February 1872, six days after giving birth to her last child, who also died within a couple of months.  For information about their marriage and descendants see my Morrison page.

The information I have from her gravestone is that her Elizabeth’s birth date is listed as 23 May 1830.  Since her husband was born in 1839, I have often wondered if this was a misreading.  If anyone out there can visit the cemetery and get me a photograph of the stone, I would appreciate it.  I would also love to know if there are other Davises buried in the cemetery.

One mystery surrounding Elizabeth Davis is that in the 1870 census, when she should have been listed with her husband she is missing.   Instead, we find his second wife living in his household.  The children’s names are somewhat mixed up too.

So who were Elizabeth’s parents?

Since she was married in Martin Co., IN in January of 1861 it is certainly possible that her family would be listed in the Martin Co. area in the 1860 census.  A search in the Ancestry census index for 1860 for Elizabeth Davis (soundex match), b. 1830-1840 in Martin Co. brings up only one match.  The same search in the surrounding counties brings up nothing in Orange, Lawrence, Dubois, or Greene.  There is one match in Daviess Co., Elizabeth Davis, age 28, wife of Morgan Davis.  She is listed with him again in 1870.

While it is certainly possible that she came with her family from somewhere else or that she had been married before, hence the possible age difference between she and her husband.  I think it is worth noting that the one Elizabeth who appears in 1860 in Martin Co. is the daughter of Marine and Sarah Davis.  She does not appear with her parents in 1870.  I am not including what I know about Marine and Sarah Davis on this page because I do not yet have any evidence to connect them to my family.  However, I have written a separate post with what I have discovered regarding their family.  If anyone knows what happened to their daughter Elizabeth…whether it points to a Morrison connection or whether it disproves the theory that the two families married, I would love to hear from you.
